Main responsibilities:

  1. Simulator Development
  • Design and implement a 6-DOF helicopter dynamic model capturing translational and rotational motion.
  • Develop aerodynamic models for rotors, fuselage, and stabilizers.
  • Implement ground contact logic for hover, landing, and touchdown dynamics.
  • Integrate propulsion system and engine models, including governor control and transient torque response.
  • Model actuator dynamics (lag, rate limits, saturation) and sensor subsystems (IMU, GPS, air data, radar altimeter, image-based navigation).
  • Implement environmental models (standard atmosphere, wind, gusts, turbulence).
  1. Integration and Autopilot Interface
  • Develop interfaces between the simulator and autopilot control laws (Simulink subsystem or external block).
  • Ensure consistent data exchange between sensor models and autopilot inputs, as well as control command routing to actuators.
  • Support mission execution logic, including waypoint tracking, hover, climb/descent, and transition phases.
  1. Simulation Environment & Tools
  • Implement simulation workflows in MATLAB/Simulink ensuring modularity and replaceability of subsystems.
  • Develop data logging, visualization, and post-processing tools for performance evaluation and debugging.
  • Enable Monte Carlo and parameter sweep simulations for robustness and sensitivity studies.
  1. Verification & Validation
  • Validate the simulator’s steady-state trim and dynamic response using analytical models or flight-test data.
  • Perform sensor and environmental model validation per applicable standards.
  • Ensure deterministic, reproducible, and traceable simulation results through configuration-controlled data and documentation.
  1. Documentation & Future Extensions
  • Maintain clear documentation of model assumptions, parameters, and configuration files.
  • Contribute to future developments, including hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) integration, 3D visualization, and FDIR (Fault Detection, Isolation, and Recovery) extensions.

Required qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering (Aeronautical, Industrial, Electronics, or Telecommunications).
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in engineering projects.
  • Strong proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink
  • Knowledge of 6-DOF flight dynamics, aerodynamics, and rotorcraft physics.
  • Experience with control systems design (PID, LQR, state feedback, etc.).
  • Knowledge of sensor and actuator modelling including noise, latency, and failure modes.
  • Experience in numerical simulation, data post-processing, and performance analysis.
  • Understanding system identification and model validation techniques.
  • Basic familiarity with real-time simulation or HIL frameworks (desired but not required).
  • Strong analytical thinking, with a structured and rigorous approach to engineering problem-solving
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills, with an ability to present clearly to internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and act as a technical authority.
  • Fluent in English (oral and written); Spanish and German are an advantage.

Required Software and Tools

  • MATLAB/Simulink (required).
  • Simscape Multibody, Aerospace Blockset (advantageous).
  • Version control (Git, SVN).
  • Data visualization and reporting tools.
